Developed economies such as Canada and the European Union are also looking to create new systems to expand carbon pricing to new sectors in a bid to drive down emissions.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">\u201c2023 was the planet\u2019s warmest year on record \u2013 a stark reminder of the urgency for action,\u201d says Stefano De Clara, head of the ICAP Secretariat.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cEmissions trading is a proven policy tool which can cut emissions faster, and at a lower cost, than other options. The uptake of emissions trading captured by this year\u2019s report is encouraging, as are the innovations and fresh thinking some jurisdictions are bringing to the table to make it work for their local circumstances.\u201d<\/span>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--default l-container l-container--small\">\r\n<div class=\"paragraph__content\">\r\n<div class=\"field field--label-visually_hidden field--type-text_long field-text\">\r\n<div class=\"field__label visually-hidden\">This year\u2019s report also includes, for the first time, an overview of key trends around the world as well as factsheets on intensity-based emissions trading systems, to reflect the growing use of this approach.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"field__content\">\r\n\r\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">The world\u2019s compliance emissions markets raised a record-breaking USD 74 billion in 2023, buoyed by higher prices in some systems \u2013 notably the EU and UK \u2013 as well as an increased use of auctioning to distribute allowances.
