A República Dominicana organiza um workshop estratégico sobre créditos de carbono para fortalecer sua ação climática
The Dominican government recently took the bold step of organizing a strategic workshop focusing on the transferability of carbon credits, underlining the crucial importance of establishing a carbon market in the country.
The workshop, orchestrated by the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources and the Centro de Desarrollo Agropecuario y Forestal (Cedaf), was in line with the commitments made under the Paris Agreement. The central objective was to raise awareness of the tangible benefits of a well-established carbon market, not only in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but also as an economic catalyst.
Milagros De Camps, Deputy Minister for the Environment, underlined the crucial importance of this initiative, highlighting the pressing need to mobilize financial resources to mitigate the effects of climate change. She stressed the central role of a dynamic carbon market in the transition to a sustainable economy, creating a symbiosis between environmental protection and economic development.
The workshop was also marked by the participation of over 40 officials and experts from public, private and non-governmental institutions, including members of the ALLCOT group, who shared convincing examples of countries such as India and China, which have successfully integrated carbon management mechanisms. This collaboration reinforced the Dominican Republic’s belief in the importance of learning from global successes to develop specific, sustainable solutions.
In particular, Cedaf and the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources have developed the Capacity Building for Transparency (CBIT) project to strengthen the knowledge of stakeholders involved in setting up a carbon market. This project is recognized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), which support the Capacity Building for Transparency Initiative. The Dominican Republic’s commitment to this initiative reflects its significant role in the transition to a low-carbon economy, and its desire to promote an environment conducive to innovation and sustainable economic growth. It sends a strong message to the international community about the country’s determination to be a key player in the fight against climate change and to forge a greener, more resilient future for generations to come.
