Panama in the final steps to present its first Biennial Transparency Report (BTR)

The Ministry of Environment presented the results of the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory 2024 to members of the National Committee on Climate Change, the Committee on Environmental Statistics and key stakeholders for final validation before reporting to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

During the validation workshop, the new results of the inventory were presented, which includes a time series of emissions and absorptions from 2000 to 2021, while members were made aware of the importance of this tool in decision-making and the development of national policies based on scientific information.

This report has been prepared to comply with the new requirements established by the Convention for the reporting of new biennial transparency reports. This new update includes methodological improvements and new data sources reflecting a progressive improvement in transparency, comprehensiveness and accuracy, demonstrating Panama’s commitment to the quality of its reports.

INGEI2024 is the third inventory prepared since the establishment of the Sustainable National GHG Inventory System of Panama, which has allowed the process to be institutionalized, the quality of information to be improved, and national capacities to be promoted.

The presentation of these reports not only guarantees access to climate information in Panama, but also strengthens national capacities and contributes to the successful implementation of the Paris Agreement. The Committee will have a period of 15 days to issue comments and provide feedback on the document and thus continue with the process of reporting to the convention and its dissemination.

Notes:

  • The INGEI are updated every two years and as established by the convention, the last reporting year must not be more than 4 years old.
  • The development of the inventory is regulated by decree 100 of October 20, 2020.
  • The process and tools for preparing the inventories are established in the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Procedure Manual, which was adopted by Ministerial Resolution No. DM-0138-2022 of July 5, 2022.
